Best Southern Fried Okra Recipe

This is my Daddy's southern Arkansas way of frying okra: Ingredients are about 12 tender okra pods (approx. 1-1/2 cups) sliced into bite-sized" pieces, 1 beaten egg with about 2 tablespoons of buttermilk, 1 cup of yellow cornmeal, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and 1/2 cup vegetable oil.

Soak the okra in room-temperature egg mixture, not cold but room temp. to soak okra for about 8-10 mins (hopefully okra is already tender when bought). In another bowl, mix the cornmeal, salt, & pepper. Heat the oil in a skillet ( in cast iron skillet is always BEST) over medium-high heat. Coat the okra bites EVENLY in cornmeal mixture & place in hot oil and stir them CONTINUOUSLY or it will burn easily! Reduce heat to medium when okra first starts to brown, and cook until golden but not too browned or the flavor is not so good. I do not recommend cooking fried okra in air fryer because they burn so easily.

I want to try Southern fried Okra as soon as possible. I guess the photo turned on my hungry for good foods. Specially when you wrote "1 beaten egg with about 2 tablespoons of buttermilk, 1 cup of yellow cornmeal" it really looks good.

Good to eat vegetables and get some good flavors from this dish. Also it has a good look when served at the table.

Hi Jackson, and good question hehe! Ok, so the Southern United States aka The Southern States or "The South" among is an American term for the Southeastern part of the United States of America. And, the States farthest to the south are called the "Deep South". According to the U.S. government, the Southern States are Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. I am a Southern Belle from South Arkansas and I will share my Momma's famous Southern Fried Chicken with ya soon, you'll love it a lot!

When you say Southern, what that means? South Florida? or perhaps Southern Texas? To me, that dish is great and it is the main cause of being hungry, it makes me to become very hungry for fried chicken or white fish fried too.
